Obsidian, named after its Roman discoverer, Obsius, is known by various other names, such as ‘Iceland agate’, ‘volcano glass’ and ‘mirror of the Incas’. The power of this ‘nature’s glass’ is legendary.
Formed by cooling lava that hardened so quickly that it failed even to form a crystalline structure, this stone can be polished into a dark glossy hard glass. In fact, this hard glass becomes so sharp-edged on breaking that it had been used by the ancients for making tools and arms. It continues to be used in scalpels for precise surgeries.
